Walls, alleys and Renaissance buildings

Coming from Arezzo, you reach the upper part of the village where, looking out from the gardens of the Campo alla Fiera, you can enjoy a splendid panorama. Going down via della Propositura, you come across the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, which dates back to the 18th century and which houses some interesting works of art. Once inside the walls, you arrive in Popolo Square, the heart of the old castle. Here you see the Palazzo Pretorio (today it is the town hall) decorated with the coats of arms of the vicars and of the podestą who governed on behalf of Florence.

Going down one of the typical medieval alleways, you reach the Church of Badia: inside there are two interesting wooden sculptures; opposite, in the ex-church of Corpus Domini, is the Misericordia Museum.
The palazzo Taglieschi, seat of the Taglieschi National Museum and the palazzo Marzocco which houses the Battle Museum are both in Mameli Square.

Going further down the covered alley you reach via di Ronda, on the northern walls. Going out of the city walls through the Porta Fiorentina, you find yourself in Baldaccio Square, the old marketplace.
Crossing Corso Matteotti (the steep “ruga”) and continuing under the Galleria Girolamo Magi (1889) to Piazza IV Novembre, we find the Teatro dei Ricomposti, a remarkable building from 1789, and the Tempio Votivo dedicated to the fallen (having started life as a private chapel in 1778). Going up the last part of the Ruga, between the two wings of noble palaces, you reach the Convento della Croce, where some interesting paintings are kept.
