Carmignano

The Montalbano

Il Comune di Carmignano comprende anche la parte sud-est del Montalbano, il rilievo che divide la piana di Firenze-Prato-Pistoia dal Valdarno Inferiore.

Near the pass whe found the Abbey of St. Giusto al Pinone, a romanesque building. Founded between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, it shows influences of the Benedectine Cluniacens architecture and of the Provenzal and Spanish romanesque, in the high and narrow nave, which is suggestive in the scarce light which penetrates from the windows of the façade and of the three apses.

The summit area of Pietramarina was occupied by the Etruscans from VII century b.C.
Nowadays it is characterised by hollies and seculars holins-oaks of great naturalistic interest.
The rilief, that is surrounded by a boundary wall, is clearly legible on the ground even if it is still undergrounded
In the most elevate part of the site the archeologics digs have brought to light different building structures: among these, a building of huge dimension, with strong masonry and its exploration must be still completed.

The royal Barco
The Barco (the park) was
a large hunting-preserve, circumscribed by a wall,
that the Medici possessed
in the area of Montalbano.
The perimetrical wall
(nearly 50 kilometres long)
was two metres high and contained a preserve of
nearly 4000 hectars,
where game were
at disposal of
royal huntings.
