The Petroio walled
town, once called “Castro Pretorio”, rises on a well defended hill,
definitely inhabited in the Etruscan period.
The historic centre is very well preserved and is worth a visit.

At the foot of the castle there is the small
Church of Sant’Andrea, once seat of the old hospice for pilgrims,
and near it one of the oldest terracotta factories where you can see
potters busy modelling large plant pots and storage jars.
Climbing up the steep main road, on the left we can see the
Romanesque Church of San Giorgio, which has some 17th-18th century
paintings, then Palazzo Pretorio (seat of the
Terracotta Museum) and the Church of
Saints Pietro and Paolo.
At the top of the hill you end up opposite the Civic Tower and the
Keep (12th century), central part of the Cacciaconti castle.
