Trequanda

A few notes on its history

TarThis area was frequented by Etruscans and here they left some tombs, while the remains of a spa from Roman times has been found.

 Trequanda, Petroio and Castelmuzio were feuds belonging to the Cacciaconti della Scialenga family (from Asciano), which then came under the more or less strict jurisdiction of the Republic of Siena. Over the centuries, the countryside came to be acquired by Sienese nobility (Tolomei, Piccolomini), by the Monte Oliveto Maggiore Abbey, by the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala and other families of citizens who spread share-cropping.

After the Second World War, with a crisis in traditional agriculture, Trequanda had a definite drop in population: from 3519 inhabitants in 1951 to 1417 in 2001. Agriculture, production of terracotta and tourism are today the main resources of this village.
