It is worthwhile starting a visit from the northern part of the village, along the Rio Grande, where you can see the medieval fortifications, with the bases of some cylindrical towers. Going under the arches of the Torre Reale also called “torre delle Quattro Porte” there are 12th and 13th century houses and the massive structure of a stone tower, later made part of the Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall). This is an interesting building carved out of what was the Rocca Pisana. The two imposing Torri Gemelle, built between the 12th and 14th centuries in stone and brick, constituted, together with the first tower, the resistant structure of the 14th century rocca.

From the Palazzo Comunale you can climb up towards the old hill, passing other important tower-houses on the way. As you do so you begin to skirt the great wall of the defence system designed by Brunelleschi, until you reach the medieval Palazzo Pretorio.
