Museums - Sesto Fiorentino

The Doccia Museum of Porcelain

Opened in 1965, this museum is mainly devoted to the production by the Manufacture founded in 1737 by Carlo Ginori in the vicinity of his villa at Doccia.
The museum building, designed by Nicolò Berardi, is located opposite today’s Manufacture, which is owned by the Richard Ginori Ceramics Company.
The original nucleus of the Museum was the Gallery established in 1754 by Marquis Ginori to put on display his factory’s best production. This collection, enlarged year after year and still owned by the Ginori family despite their selling of the factory in 1896, is now complemented by the so-called ‘Museo delle Terre’ (earths’ museum) boasting hundreds of samples of different clays and colours.
Moreover there is a wax model collection of great historical relevance, as it is related to the production methods of the Manufacture.

In the Museum the about 3,000 pieces are arranged in chronological order into six periods, covering the whole production from 1735 to present, and named after the Ginoris leading the company: Carlo, Lorenzo, Carlo Leopoldo, Lorenzo II, Carlo Benedetto and the actual owner, Richard Ginori.
Of particular significance is the 1923-1930 production, in cooperation with designer Giò Ponti.
